03. What Is Embodiment? A Beginner’s Guide for Women

Jun 25, 2025

The word embodiment gets thrown around a lot these days — especially in healing, feminine energy, and personal growth spaces — but what does it actually mean?

It took me a long time to really get it myself, so let me break it down simply.

What does embodiment actually mean?

At its core, embodiment means being in your body.

It means being connected to and present with your sensations, emotions, intuition, needs, and desires — rather than living in your mind and operating from this place all the time. It's a way of moving through life with your body, instead of ignoring it or overriding it.

To understand embodiment, it may help to understand disembodiment — which is how most of us have been taught to function. Disembodiment looks like:

  • Overthinking everything
  • Numbing out or disconnecting from your emotions
  • Ignoring your needs until burnout
  • Feeling uncomfortable in your own skin

In contrast, embodiment is about returning to your body as home. It's where your truth, power, pleasure, and wisdom live.

Why do so many women feel disconnected from their bodies?

Because we've been conditioned to be.

We live in a world that values logic over emotion, productivity over rest, performance over presence. From a young age, many of us were taught to be polite, pretty, quiet, and “good” — often at the expense of our truth.

We’ve learned to suppress our emotions to avoid being "too much."
We’ve internalised the idea that our worth comes from how we look, not how we feel.
We’ve been sexualised and objectified — while simultaneously being shamed for expressing desire or pleasure.

This creates deep confusion, shame and disconnection.

So it makes sense if being in your body feels unfamiliar, unsafe, or even overwhelming at first. There is nothing wrong with you — this is a byproduct of the world we were raised in.

The good news is: you can return to yourself. And below I'm sharing with you some simple steps to start becoming more embodied!

How do I start practicing embodiment?

First you must know embodiment doesn't just happen over night. It is a journey and an ongoing practice, and it starts with these simple practices you can begin today:

  1. Start with awareness
Take a moment each day to pause and check in.
Ask yourself: What sensations do I notice in my body right now? What emotions are present?
This practice of noticing will begin building your connection back to self.
  2. Move your body slowly & intentionally
Gentle, intuitive movement, without a goal, agenda or aesthetic, is a powerful way to reconnect. This could be stretching, dancing with your eyes closed, or placing your hands on your body and swaying to music.
  3. Breathe deeply into your belly
So many of us breathe up high in our chest, especially when anxious or stuck in our heads. Try placing a hand on your lower belly and breathing into that space. It helps drop you back in. This will also help regulate your nervous system.
  4. Let yourself feel
Instead of judging or fixing your emotions, try letting them move through you. Cry if you need to. Sigh. Shake. Put words to what you're feeling. The more you allow your emotions, the more your body begins to trust you, and the more connected you will become.
  5. Come home to pleasure
Not just sexual pleasure — but anything that brings you aliveness. Drinking tea slowly, feeling the sun on your skin, taking a deep exhale. Pleasure reconnects you to your body in the most nourishing way.

TL;DR

Embodiment isn’t something you achieve — it’s a practice you return to. Again and again.

The more you listen to your body, the louder she speaks.
The more you honour her rhythms, the more grounded and powerful you feel.

You don’t need to be perfect. You just need to begin.
